Abstract:

The following topics were covered in these two lectures: the importance of materials in human civilization, the relationship between the properties and the micro and macrostructures, the classification of materials on the basis of their properties, electronic materials and their diversity resistivity, resistance, conductivity and conductance metallic bonding free electron model of conduction in metals (qualitative) – the Drude’s Model, drift velocity, difference between classical and quantum mechanics, energy band theory, energy band diagrams, and the conventions followed in drawing them, energy level treatment of insulators and conductors, introduction to semiconductors and their types, the purity threshold of a semiconductor, covalent bonding in semiconductors, hole and electron – recombination and generation, physical models for conduction in intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, energy level treatment of intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, and fermi level were covered in the talk.
