Tribute to Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqi

Honouring the life of

Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqi

(June 1950 — Dec 2020)

Founding President of Khwarizmi Science Society

Prof Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqi breathed his last on 8 December 2020 after a brief illness. He was Professor of Physics at the Centre for Solid State Physics, the Punjab University, which he also led as Director. After retirement from the University in 2010, he joined the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials at COMSATS University as Professor.

Dr Siddiqi was an inspiration for thousands of students, friends and youngsters. He was a physicist. Born on 12 June 1950 in Gujranwala, his family settled in Lahore in 1965. He completed his matriculation as a bright, honest and upright student from the renowned Central Model School Lower Mall Road. He was among the pioneering class of physics students at the newly founded Government Superior College, Wahdat Road, from where he completed his M.Sc. in Physics. He then joined the Punjab University as lecturer in 1975, also the year when his father, a wireless operator in the army and then in Pakistan Times, left to his heavenly abode.

Dr Siddiqi, while he was employed at the Punjab University, completed his Masters and PhD from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom. His field of research encompassed ceramics, crystallography, magnetic materials and was also among the pioneers of experimental high temperature superconductivity in the country. Having spent time at the University of Cambridge and Abdus Salam ICTP in Italy, he was renowned for his work on functional ceramics. He helped establish the Centre for Solid State Physics as a center of excellence for materials related research. His graduate students are spread all over the world and continue his mission.

In the last ten years, Dr Siddiqi focused his attention on biomaterials, in particular artificial bone and dental materials. Set up in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2005, the Biomedical Materials Centre aimed at producing low cost, technological advanced, efficacious biomaterials for use in the country. With his associations with these institutions, Dr. Siddiqi leaves a legacy of 45 years of excellence, integrity and commitment to education and scientific knowledge.

A deeply patriotic person, versed in languages, an admirer of poetry and music, Dr Siddiqi’s most overarching contribution to societal benefit is in the form of the Khwarizmi Science Society which he founded in 1997 and was aimed to become a grass-roots movement for creating scientific awareness in the public, inciting the curiosity for knowing about nature, inspiring students to study with a desire to create new knowledge and motivating teachers to teach with a flare of brilliance. The Society introduced the concept of science festivals and with the collaboration of the Ali Institute of Education, organized yearly Lahore Science Melas that attracted thousands of curious visitors from the citizenry and hundreds of schools from all throughout the country and beyond to a temporary science museum set up in the vast lawns of the Institute. The movement has now catalyzed a strong wave of science popularization in the country. It is expected that hundreds of thousands of students and children have been touched by these activities.

Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqi was a man of ideas and believed in only those ideas that could be crystallized and implemented. He dedicated a lifetime to nurturing the character of young souls, mentoring thousands of individuals, writing about science for the public, always aiming to raise the profile of purposeful education and world-class research in Pakistan. He will be deeply missed by many.

Here, we have compiled some of the tribute messages for Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqi. If you wish to contribute to this page, kindly write to us at info@khwarizmi.org.

An Online Session was held on 12 June 2021 to pay a tribute to the deeply inspiring life of Dr Siddiqi.

"Dear Sabieh Bhai - Your father inspired us, stood by us and guided us wholeheartedly. We have always seen you at many fronts - but in the last 6 months we saw you as an immensely strong person - who knows the loss more than you and your siblings and your whole family - but to still let us come here and pour our heart out - is amazing. May Allah give you strength - you are truly his children. Thank You."

“Back in the mid-90s, in search of finding the office of KSS, I first met him at his centre in PU where he shared his passion for Science and how it should be and can be accessible to general public as well. I became a life member of KSS there and then.

While leading KSS with Dr Sabieh Anwer (his brilliant son), Saadat Sahib fought a lot of battles, worked tirelessly and continued thinking of new ideas for his dream of seeing Science in the hands of general public and young children. Thankfully he sure did see his dream fulfilled.

He would talk hours with me about various topics and specially about Lahore Astronomical Society‘s collaboration with Khwarizmi Science Society on spreading Astronomy everywhere. In IYA 2009, KSS and LAST, and Society of the Sun did massive public gatherings with live Astronomical viewing sessions with big telescopes among the audience of reaching thousands in numbers. He would still want more!

He was always very very encouraging to me and to others as well.. never got depressed.. we lost a gem today.. Truly sad day!

Let’s keep his passion alive.. Let’s keep his dream alive.. and let his spirit for science and education and humanity keep alive in our work, everyday of our lives.” — Umair Asim (President, Lahore Astronomical Society; Joint Secretary, Khwarizmi Science Society; Director, CBSAP Pakistan)

“That smile on the face
Which cannot be forgotten

The cardamom smell from the mouth
That kind soul, no doubt

The soft fragrance of rainwater and just a hint of vanilla
Specifically, Rainwater which is on an umbrella

That space between front two teeth
But rest of them they all meet

Now these things are invisible
They all have faded in dust

These all things will stay in my mind
These things equals to a man which is most kind”

Muneebah Fatimah (granddaughter)

“Prof Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqui Sahib has left for his heavenly abode. He was a great physicist, dignified academic and humane, loving, and caring person. Besides his subject, his flair for literature and art was equally impressive. His son Dr Muhammad Sabieh Anwar is an eminent Physicist, a Rhodes scholar, Iqbal scholar, renowned public speaker, distinguished old Ravian and a very dear friend. Prof Sahib had brought up his children as role models for all of us. Both the father and the son have worked really hard for the promotion of science education in the Pakistani educational institutions. May Allah bless his soul with the highest rank in Jannah tul Firdous! May Allah grant sabr and strength to the beareaved family to brave this unbearable loss. Aameen!” — Mr Siddique Awan, Assistant Professor, Department of English, GC University Lahore

“We’re taking a moment today to pay a small tribute to Dr. Saadat Anwar Siddiqi, the President and Founder of the Khwarizmi Science Society (خوارزمی سائنس سوسائٹی), who passed away on December 8, 2020.

Dr. Saadat’s efforts in the field of Science Communication in Pakistan paved the way & created an ecosystem where social enterprises like ours can thrive.

These photos (shared below) are from a workshop conducted last year (2019) in preparation for Lahore Science Mela. This is an annual event which has become a landmark celebration of science in Pakistan.

We remember this workshop very fondly as this was the 1st time our team was presenting at an event with Dr. Saadat in attendance, which in itself was a huge honour.

This workshop was organised to give government school children & teachers from 34 districts in Punjab an insight into science communication. The Lahore Science Mela team had come up with a brilliant idea to share tools & resources with government schools in Punjab who’d be presenting amazing science experiments live at the science mela!

When we had performed our bit, Dr. Saadat paid us a compliment & appreciated our work. It was a beautiful moment of pride & joy to receive a compliment from him. It also demonstrated the generosity, kindness & encouragement that both Dr. Saadat & his son, Dr. Sabieh have always extended us & to many other young social enterprises like ours.

We will always remember you for contributing so brilliantly to the world of science & science communication in Pakistan!
Our condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace, ameen sum ameen!” — Lalah Rukh, Founder, Science Fuse / Spark your neurons

A tribute video about the inspiring life of Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiq (produced by Media Lab).

“One of my physics teachers from my school, used to frequently remember one of his associates and shared many of his experiences with this person, from whom he learned a lot, and always brought him up during class as an example of. I always was very inquisitive about who that person was. I was very close to my science teachers, and asked him about the identity of the person. I inquired, but he rebuffed, and said perhaps I do not know him. Upon much insistence, he told me that person is Dr. Saadat Anwar Siddiqui. At that time, I was young, and was unable to associate him with you (Dr Sabieh Anwar), but later joined the dots and realised the stature of Dr. Saadat. Almost everyone associated with Physics in Lahore from perhaps the late 70s to even uptil the 2010s, knew him as an asset to academia.

The loss is indeed unbearable – I understand the feeling of the association one has with his father, not merely as a father, but also when one shares so much in interest with him and has learnt so much from him. The last memory I have of Dr Saadat is his entrance in the ambulance, where he kissed the forehead of my late maternal grandfather when he was bound to the graveyard. Perhaps this memory will last with me for all my life, as a summary of at least our familial association with him, which is, as great as it is, much smaller than the one we share in our fields and common dedication to the advocacy of Science and Technology for the greater benefit of Pakistan, her people, and her destiny.

The Holy Qu’ran mentions four categories of the righteous : Anbiya, Siddiquin, Shuhada, and the Saliheen (4:69). Dr. Saadat, as his last name “Siddiqui” suggests, is indeed with the Siddiqeen, in the hereafter. In the words of the great sage of the Ummat, Allama Muhammad Iqbal : “Jahan mein Ehl-Eman Surat e Khurshid Jeete Hain; Idhar Dubay, Udhar Nikle, Udhar Dubay, Idhar Nikle” – his legacy lives on in all who were inspired by him, and learnt even a single shannon of information from him.”  – Danish Amjad Alvi

“Words are primordially incapable of providing a judicious expression to feelings of the heart – let alone those of the soul. Yet, one has no choice but to fall back and rely on them to express and share one’s subtle most emotions. Dr. Saadat Anwar Siddiqui’s demise was one such event that has not only left the entire city in grief but also in search of words to aptly commemorate him and his magnificent contributions to the country. To briefly state this great man’s contribution to science as well as society at large, Dr. Siddiqui inspired and mobilized some of the finest and most remarkable scientific talents of Pakistan as if it was his divinely ordained purpose of life. He was the silent “Khizer” of his time, a man specified by God for initiating the scientific emancipation of Pakistan. His humble and generous personality will be heavily missed and his outstanding scientific achievements will continue to shine for times to come.

He was more than a father to me, a beloved friend, a confidant, and a mentor. It will be nearly impossible to replace a physicist of such eminence for our country, a humble and loving heart, and a mentor to our younger generation. We will miss you, sir! We will miss you real bad sir, but you will live in our hearts forever! We will continue to take light from your warmth, affection, courage, and humility.”

“I was sad and shocked to hear of the passing away on 8th December 2020 of Dr Saadat Siddiqi a long time colleague and friend. I returned from UK to Pakistan in 1972 after spending my childhood there and completing my education and was welcomed in Lahore by new friends and colleagues, notably by Prof. Dr. M.A. Shah, Dr. Anis Alam and Saadat Siddiqi. That was the beginning of a long time friendship with Dr. Saadat Anwar Siddiqi lasting almost 48 years. This was mostly in the Centre for Solid Physics at Punjab University, Lahore in the newly established (1973) Centre for Excellence. We shared the trials and tribulations of work as professional physicists in Pakistan for over 35 years together. I retired in 2007 and Saadat about two years later. Both of us have continued to work after retirement in private universities in Lahore in quite different fields, Biomedical Materials and Climate Science, respectively. Saadat has also left an enduring legacy of establishing the Khwarizmi Science Society with the able support of his talented son, Dr. Sabieh Anwar. May he rest in peace and his family and friends find the strength to overcome this irreparable loss.”  Dr Tariq Abdullah

Dr Siddiqi talking to a media-person during IYA 2009 celebrations.

“Dear Shahida, Dr Sabieh and Hina,
Please receive these roses from our garden in memory of my very dear friend Saadat and for sharing your sorrow on this special day. Your husband and father was a great personality. I am so proud for having had the chance to know him. Great men have a great heart. Saadat had a pure , noble and beautiful soul. There was nothing above his beloved family. I am happy for having captured some pictures of your lovely family that I keep like a treasure, like two notebooks full of lovely comments on his pictures.
I remember you all in my prayers. Be sure that your beloved husband, father and grandfather still accompanies you and watches over you. Stay all blessed with prosperous and healthy life.
With our best regards,
Marie-Hélène and Dany Leclere”
