Abstract:
Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS) and Ali Institute of Education (AIE) have initiated a joint Teacher Training Program, فکر انگیز سائنسی تعلیم Thought-provoking Science Education. In this program, we will focus on teaching of practical physics through thought-provoking, innovative and exciting experiments. The program comprises of three independent interactive workshops, the third and final workshop will take place on 20th - 22nd December, 2018 at the Ali Institute of Education, Ferozepur Road, Lahore.

The purpose of this workshop is to enable physics teachers to learn about the culture of modern physics experimentation preparing them to design and deliver modern, exciting and insightful physics experiments to their students. By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to get exposure to

  • building experimental hardwarefrom low-cost items;
  • use modern gadgets and techniques such as video tracking and physics using the smartphone;
  • plotting and interpretation of data, and
  • connecting the laboratory to the classroom.
  •
The hand-picked experiments to be offered in this workshop are designed based on topics selected from the syllabi of Grades 9 to 12 (matric to intermediate) and O levels. These four-five experiments will not be a replica of experiments traditionally performed by students in our laboratories, rather they are thought-inspiring experiments designed to highlight how physics practicals, in our opinion, should be conducted in an enabling, skills-oriented and contemporary fashion. All experiments will be low-cost and will become fodder for ideas for teachers who could recreate their own experiments to amplify physics topics in their textbooks.

Coverage areas:The coverage of these experiments will be from mechanics, optics, thermodynamics, basic electronics, waves and vibrations.

Laboratory skills:measurement, uncertainties, graphing, data processing, using the camera and the smartphone for physics experiments, building hardware, connecting theory with experiment, interpreting experimental results.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the workshop. If you teach physics, especially practical physics, conduct laboratory training for your students, want to set up new labs, are motivated about physics education and would like to usher in radical reforms to how physics is taught in your school, or are a headmaster or headmistress and would like to nominate some talented individual from your school or college, please fill out the registration form

Registration is required to participate in the workshop. Once the registration form is filled, the participants will be selected and shortlisted on basis of their willingness to learn, background and inclination towards practical aspects of teaching. Further details are provided below:

Abstract:

Khwarizmi Science Society has organized a public lecture by Mr. Mansoor Ahmed with the collaboration of Ali Institute of Education, Astrobiology Network of Pakistan and Lahore Astronomical Society.

Ever since the humans started to think, they have been curious about the heavens. Over the years, we have taken advantage of technological advances to gain better understanding of the universe. In some cases, this curiosity has propelled the technological advances that have been extremely beneficial in our daily lives as well. In this talk, Mr. Ahmed will discuss how our knowledge has expanded via space based astronomy with observatories such as Hubble Space Telescope and what we hope to learn with the James Web Space Telescope. This talk will further discuss the mysteries yet to be solved, missions yet to be achieved and the technological advances yet to be made. Mr. Ahmed will challenge the young generations of today to finding the answers to some the key questions for the humanity:

 How does the universe work?

 How did the universe evolve from the “Big Bang” to what it looks like today?

 Where did we come from?

 Is there life beyond earth?

 Can humans inhabit other planets?

The KSS and its collaborators cordially invite their members and friends to be a part of this remarkable discussion. Registration is required for all attendees.

Abstract:

Khwarizmi Science Society, Lahore Astronomical Society and the Ali Institute of Education are organizing a Workshop on Astrolabe Making Workshop at the Ali Institute of Education on 27th and 28th February, 2018.

An astrolabe is an ancient astronomical computer for solving problems related to time and the position of the sun and stars in the sky. Astrolabes are used to show how the sky looks at a specific space at a given time. It is a primitive device and the astrolabe was highly developed in the Islamic world by 800. it was introduced to Europe from Islamic Spain (al-Andalus) in the early twelfth century. It was the most popular astronomical instrument till mid-seventeenth century.

Astrolabe making is a dead scientific art which once revolutionized astronomy in the medieval ages. At a time, half of the world's astrolabes were produced in Lahore. To revive this lost scientific tradition among our local scientists and historians of science and technology, three experts from Holland will visit Pakistan and supervise the workshop.

Investing in our Children's Future

KSS participates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Science Popularization
Sponsors & Collaborators:

Elementary and Secondary Education Department (E&SE) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has planned to organize a week long summer camp across all 25 districts of the province. Along with training around 83,000 primary school teachers, the department has embarked upon providing a fun yet informative environment to the students for a week.

We are pleased to inform our Khwarizmi family that we, along with more than 10 other organizations, will be a part of this summer camp. This will be our contribution in this collective effort to provide better school environment, especially to learn science and maths. The government and non-government agencies will work in synergy so that every child across the province gets the opportunity to learn something out of his/her textbook, to learn something by experimentation.

The summer camp will be held simultaneously in 60 government schools across the province from 7th August, 2017 to 14th August 2017. Khwarizmi Science Society plans to visit five schools from 7th August to 10th August, 2017. Our team will be covering Peshawar and Kohat during the four-day long trip.

We, at Khwarizmi Science Society, hope to continue such collective efforts in order to normalize critical thinking among the teacher and the students.
