
Decoding Languages: An Introduction to Linguistics
Ever thought how sarcasm works? Ever thought why only humans have and use languages? Ever thought why swearing helps your relieve stress? If you are even a little bit curious about language and how it controls most of our lives, you have found the right workshop.
This is a workshop on basics of linguistics designed for students above the age of 13 and members of general public who are curious about how languages work. No prior experience or knowledge of linguistics is required. This program will encompass interactive lectures and practical sessions on some basic concepts of linguistics. We will introduce the participants to the phenomenon of a language, different ways of investigating a language, the reasons behind languages’ existence, the psychology of learning a first and a second language, how languages guide our behavior, how languages form and evolve and different speech related disorders. We will also discuss where linguistics currently stands in Pakistan and talk about some famous Pakistani linguists. The course will also touch upon how integrated the field of linguistics is and shed some light on the recent sub-fields of linguistics.
