| Air and Pressure Show at Chughtai Public Library |
|---|
Registration: Open to all. Date: August 24, 2024 Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Venue: Chughtai Public Library Abstract: Khwarizmi Science Society conducted an engaging Air and Pressure Show at Chughtai Public Library, where children explored the principles of air pressure through a series of interactive experiments. The event combined demonstrations and hands-on group activities, making science fun and accessible for the participants. Demonstrator: Faizan-e-Bahoo Chaudhry
The show kicked off with Air Pressure and Ruler Experiment demonstrating the power of air pressure using a ruler and a sheet of newspaper. Our demonstrator explained how air pressure, which exerts approximately 10,000 kg (about the weight of a school bus)/m² on the surface of the newspaper, could hold the ruler firmly in place. This experiment introduced the audience to the fundamental concept of air pressure, leaving them fascinated by the forces around them.
Next, children were divided into groups to create their own balloon hovercrafts. Using simple materials like balloons, CDs, and bottle caps, the participants constructed hovercrafts that glided smoothly across surfaces, demonstrating the effects of air pressure and friction. This hands-on activity provided a fun and practical way for the kids to see science in action.
The third segment involved a demonstration explaining how our lungs work using air pressure principles. Children built simple lung models to show how air pressure allows the lungs to expand and contract. This group activity helped the children connect the concept of air pressure with the way their own body functions, making science more relatable.
In this final experiment, Faizan and Hanzala prepared a vacuum cannon right in front of the kids. They guided the children through each step of the assembly process, explaining how air pressure can generate powerful forces. After the cannon was complete, they fired ping pong balls multiple times, which amazed the audience with the real-world application of air pressure.
By combining demonstrations with group activities, the Khwarizmi Science Society made the principles of air pressure accessible and exciting for the children. The hands-on approach ensured that science is not only educational but also memorable and fun.
