KSS’s Educational Tour to Pakistan Meteorological Department

Registration: Registration is required.
Date: September 18, 2024
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Venue: Pakistan Meteorological Department, Lahore

Abstract:

Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS) organised the second tour of the Niklo Ilm Kay Raastay Per series, visiting the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). This educational experience offered participants a unique opportunity to learn about the inner workings of one of the country’s most critical scientific institutions.

Total number of participants: 29 KSS members ranging from PhD scholars to school students

During the tour, participants were introduced to the advanced mechanisms and tools that the PMD employs for weather forecasting. The department’s state-of-the-art gauges and radar systems were showcased, explaining how they gather real-time data on atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the methods used to process this information were discussed, providing an understanding of the various models and algorithms used in meteorological predictions.

Participants also observed instruments such as a sun dial, soil thermometers, and thermometers used to measure day temperature, gaining insight into how these tools contribute to comprehensive weather monitoring.

A key highlight of the tour was the detailed explanation of the flood forecasting system. Participants learned from the PMD director about how this system plays a vital role in predicting and managing floods, offering critical insights into how data-driven tools are essential for disaster preparedness.

The visit also included an exploration of the weather radar system, where participants observed how real-time atmospheric data is collected and integrated into forecasting models. This hands-on experience underscored the importance of cutting-edge technology in enhancing the accuracy of weather predictions.

This tour to the Pakistan Meteorological Department was an insightful addition to the Niklo Ilm Kay Raastay Per series, showcasing the critical role of science and technology in shaping the future.

Testimonials from Participants:
  • Thank you so much for organising such an informative visit – Haroon Ejaz
  • Thanks to KSS for this informative trip – Ghulam Moin U Din
  • Thanks KSS for informative tour – Zahra Ali Asghar
  • Heartfelt gratitude and thanks towards KSS, organising & guiding team for today’s insightful visit 💝 – Hammad Ali
  • It was super informative it was worth starving myself and drove directly from school:) – Muhammad Soban Ali
  • Thank you so much KSS. Both visits were really informative. .stay blessed – Abdul Kareem
  • Thank you KSS, a very thought provoking event, where we learnt the Pakistani mechanism of meteorology department. Their gauges and radar system for gathering information and then processing methods and a little or just names of models on the basis of which prediction or forecasting is done. And especially how our govt departments are viewing on foreign grants for up-gradation and no government support, I hope young generation here will solve the financial needs of Pakistan. Well done KSS – Muhammad Yameen
