“The Mysterious Universe”, Khwarizmi Science Society recently hosted its third public lecture featuring Prof. Dr. M. Suhail Zubairy on 20th December 2023. Taking center stage, the second time for KSS’s public lecture series, Dr. Zubairy delivered a captivating presentation entirely in Urdu, offering a unique perspective on the revolutionary scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century, making complex ideas accessible to a diverse audience.
Ending his lecture by the profound words of Werner Heisenberg,
“Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it
is stranger than we can think”
Dr Zubairy guided the audience through a journey into the realms of quantum mechanics and relativity, unravelling the enigma of space and time. Navigating the theories of iconic figures such as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, James Clark, and Edwin Hubble, Dr. Zubairy provided comprehensive and approachable insights through fundamental diagrams and real-world examples.
A testament to the lecture’s accessibility was the involvement of a ten year old attendee, who felt inspired to pose a question about quantum optics, which prompted loud applause in the auditorium. Other questions posed had time travel (originated from the all time favourite interstellar), Cosmological Implications, Black Holes and Quantum Gravity, and even a thought-provoking inquiry into the potential intersection of quantum mechanics with consciousness.
Towards the end, he presented his remarkable book, “The Mysterious Universe”, on the dice.
In The post-lecture session, he engaged in vibrant conversations, responding to numerous inquiries from the audience. A heartfelt scene unfolded as he personally handed his book to a young physics enthusiast, marking a moment of inspiration and connection.
Additionally on this occasion, the Khwarizmi Science Society expressed gratitude to Crescent Model Higher Secondary School for hosting the Lahore Science Mela 23 and acknowledged the school’s invaluable contribution as a venue partner and presented gifts to the school management through Dr. Zubairy, emphasising the collaborative effort that made the event a triumph.
