STEM Teacher Training Workshop at Gilgit-Baltistan

Abstract:

KSS delivered a teacher training program in Gilgit-Baltistan with the support of ALIGHT Pakistan and the
Directorate of Education Gilgit-Baltistan. The attendees belonged to the ten districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and
consisted of 20 female and 24 male teachers. The two-day workshop brought together STEM school &
college teachers from all the districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. The workshop was also attended by people from the Education Department of Gilgit-Baltistan, members of ALIGHT Pakistan, and the students at the College of Education where the workshop was held.

The workshop participants were introduced to STEM, its background, and its importance which is a need of the hour for schools and colleges all over Pakistan. Dr. Sabieh introduced to the participants the properties of light, how it interacts, and how in our daily life, we let go of the minute details that make up everything around us and how the use of proper techniques and tools in a classroom makes all the difference as a teacher.

Dr. Mustafa enlightened the participants on how the art of teaching is evolving ever more rapidly and how we should evolve as teachers. He also engaged with the audience in such a manner on how to make classroom lessons fun, interactive, and engaging. The attendees also participated in various activities to learn science concepts using simple everyday objects found in a kitchen, at home, or in a simple laboratory. Integration of technology with conventional teaching methods was also part of the teacher workshop.

Mr. Muhammad Yausoob introduced to the audience the subject of Astronomy and how despite being absent from our curriculums, it is the most native science and present. The participants also learned how to get familiar with the night sky and see the planets of our solar system with the naked eye. The participants also learned how to make 3D glasses and spectrometers using a CD and a sundial. They can make everything and more on their own and even come up with new ones.
