Liquid Nitrogen Show at Chughtai Public Library

On June 1st, 2024, the basement of Chughtai Public Library became a hub of scientific discovery as the Khwarizmi Science Society showcased the unique properties of liquid nitrogen. The event engaged attendees with demonstrations revealing the unusual behaviour of materials at -196°C.

The exhibition began with a striking display of air contraction at the temperature of -196°C. Mohsina and Ayesha used balloons to demonstrate this effect. As the balloons were exposed to the frigid liquid nitrogen, they rapidly shrunk, showing the principle of thermal contraction and the significant reduction in volume when gases are condensed via cooling.


Next in line was Mohsina and Ayesha‘s captivating demonstration with vibrant leaves and delicate flowers. They immersed them in liquid nitrogen and the once supple and colorful plant material became brittle and shattered upon impact. The audience was fully engaged and watched with amazement. This experiment highlighted the impact of extreme cold on organic matter, illustrating the altered state of materials at such low temperatures.

Following this, Mohsina and Ayyaz demonstrated the condensation of atmospheric oxygen on a cone filled with liquid nitrogen. The surrounding oxygen condensed into a visible pale blue liquid as the cold nitrogen gas enveloped the cone. This demonstration illustrated the varying boiling points of atmospheric gases and provided a clear example of phase transitions induced by temperature changes.

Engaging the younger audience, Mohsina and Ayesha presented the Leiden-frost effect. When liquid nitrogen was poured onto a warm surface, droplets formed that danced and skittered. The children eagerly participated, observing this phenomenon and learning about the insulating vapor layer responsible for this effect. This hands-on activity encouraged curiosity and active learning.


The final demonstration featured quantum levitation. Using a superconductor chilled with liquid nitrogen, the demonstrators showed how a magnet could levitate above the superconductor, suspended in mid-air. This exhibit provided a glimpse into quantum physics, leaving the audience fascinated.



Through these demonstrations, the Khwarizmi Science Society revealed the marvels of liquid nitrogen, emphasising fundamental principles of physics and chemistry. The event entertained and inspired a deeper appreciation for the wonders of science.
