Abstract:

Khwarizmi Science Society launched a lecture series in 2023 titled "Paakistan Kay Khazaanay." Covering an impressive range of topics—including history, neurology, marine life, and the cosmos—the series has captivated audiences.

Continuing this traditiony, KSS hosted a public lecture featuring Prof. Dr. M. Suhail Zubairy on 29th December 2024. Marking his third appearance in KSS’s public lecture series, Prof. Zubairy delivered an insightful presentation entirely in Urdu. His talk delved into the revolutionary scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century, addressing perplexing mysteries of the quantum world and the diverse theories proposed to explain them.

Barkat Ali Islamia Hall was named on Khan Bahadur Barkat Ali Khan, a famous member of nobility of Lahore. its construction was started in 1888. Khan Bahadur Barkat Ali Khan was the founder of Anjuman Islamia Punjab. And after his death, this building was named after him. Under the roof of this building, the voices of leaders like Iqbal, Jinnah and Gandhiji have echoed and the candle of consciousness has been lit in many minds, and today we are continuing this tradition and being a part of another memorable event in which we will enlighten our minds about complex quantum concepts!

Now back to the lecture.

Prof. Zubairy began his presentation with a thought-provoking quote by Werner Heisenberg:

"Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think"

This powerful statement set the tone for an exploration into the enigmatic world of quantum mechanics. Prof. Zubairy discussed the evolution of scientific thought over centuries, tracing the nature of light and particle movement. He highlighted groundbreaking contributions by legendary scientists such as Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, James Clerk Maxwell, and Edwin Hubble. The lecture addressed the major challenges faced by researchers and the ingenious solutions that unraveled some of the universe’s deepest mysteries.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where Prof. Zubairy engaged in vibrant discussions with the audience. He thoughtfully responded to numerous inquiries, leaving participants both enlightened and inspired by the fascinating insights shared during the talk.

About the Speaker:

Prof. M. Suhail Zubairy is presently a University Distinguished Professor at the Texas A&M University and the holder of the Munnerlyn-Heep Chair in Quantum Optics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1978 and held research and teaching appointments at the Optical Sciences Center of the University of Arizona and the Center for Advanced Studies at the University of New Mexico before joining the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan in 1984. He served as Professor of Electronics and the founding Chairman of the Department of Electronics at the Quaid-i-Azam University before joining Texas A&M University in 2004.

Prof. Zubairy's research interests include quantum optics and laser physics. He is the co-author of two books, one on Quantum Optics and the other on Quantum Computing Devices. He published a book on Quantum Mechanics for Beginners which is based on a course on quantum mechanics that he taught to freshmen students just out of high school. Recently he published a popular book entitled A Mysterious Universe that presents the laws that govern the universe.

He has received many honors including the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize, the Outstanding Physicist Award from the Organization of Islamic Countries, the Abdus Salam Prize in Physics, the International Khwarizmi Award from the President of Iran, the Orders of Hilal-e-Imtiaz and Sitara-e-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan, and the George H. W. Bush Award for Excellence in International Research. He also received Changjiang Distinguished Scholar Award which is the highest award given to a University Professor in China and is rarely given to a non-Chinese. He is an elected Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America.
